Reference Services

The Max Webber Library's extensive reference collection, which is only for use in the Library, contains encyclopaedias, yearbooks, dictionaries, atlases, indexes and many standard reference works on a range of subjects. These and other information resources are available in print and CD-ROM format, through online databases and the Internet.

Branch Libraries have smaller reference collections but are readily able to access the resources at Max Webber Library, which include:

  • Information Services: Staff at the Reference Desk will assist users in accessing information and reference resources including those for local studies and family histories.
  • Ask-A-Librarian: This service allows library members to ask questions online and receive answers via email. We can help with study, with your information needs at work, about resources that we may have in the library, or about simple facts.
  • Inter-Library Loans: Items not held by the Library may be obtained from another library through Inter-Library Loans. There is a nominal fee charged for this service and any additional fees charged by the lending library are passed on to the borrowers.
  • Newspapers and Journals: Current and back issues of selected newspapers and journals are held in a variety of formats.
  • Legal Information Access Centre: Blacktown Library is part of the statewide LIAC network that provides access to the law through the plain language Legal Tool Kit, Hot Topics, law books for libraries and pamphlet collection.
  • Australian Bureau of Statistics: A wide range of census and statistical information is available through Blacktown Library's participation in the A.B.S. Library Extension Program.
  • Australian Standards: A collection of current Australian Standards is maintained.
  • Current Affairs Files: Pamphlets, newspaper articles and other material on various topics are maintained to supplement printed and electronic information.
  • HSC Resources: This collection includes past examination papers, reports and syllabus (in print and CD-ROM) and HSC study guides. A guide to the Library's HSC English resources is compiled annually. HSC English lectures are usually organised every year.
  • Internet: Free access is available at Max Webber Library, Blacktown and all branch libraries.
  • Australian Telephone Directories: Telephone directories (white and yellow pages) for all capital cities and regions in Australia are kept.

The Max Webber Library also maintains special collections in Local Studies and Family History.
