Local Studies

The Local Studies collection consists of a range of material on the social, environmental and geological history of the Blacktown Local Government area. The most extensive collection of resources is held at the Max Webber Library, Blacktown, although each of the branch libraries have material available.

Items in the Local Studies collection must be used in the library. Where possible however, some duplicate material has been placed in the general nonfiction lending collection.

The range of Local Studies resources available include:

  • microfilmed copies of local newspapers
  • books and serials that deal with local history or have local content
  • vertical files of local studies material, including newspaper clippings, brochures, programmes etc. A guide to these Vertical Files is held and regularly updated
  • council archival records
  • local church and school records
  • maps
  • photographs
  • audio-visual material of local interest including video recordings of festivals and events
  • oral history records.

There is some local history material available on the council's web page.

The Max Webber Library, Blacktown also houses a special collection of Family History resources.

The Blacktown City Council Library Service offers an extensive collection of Lending Resources as well as a number of In Library Services.
