Summer reading celebrates love of books

07 March 2017

It’s official: Blacktown’s young people love books. Almost 400 children took part in Blacktown City Libraries Summer Reading Program this year, reading more than 10,000 books between them.

The children were presented with certificates for participation at a ceremony in Blacktown’s Bowman Hall on Thursday night.

This annual Summer Reading Program takes place Australia wide and is designed to engage and encourage young people to develop a love of books and a passion for reading over the long summer holidays.

“This is the 10th year that Blacktown City Libraries has run the Summer Reading Program, and it is my pleasure to say it has been a resounding success,” Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tony Bleasdale said.

“This year 398 children took part in the program, reading an impressive 10,370 books, or 26 books a child.

“These results demonstrate the program’s success and, most important of all, show the children’s joy for reading.

“Put simply, they read because they wanted to read.

“Reading opened up new worlds, took them on an adventure and showed them what is possible within the pages of a good book.”

Deputy Mayor Bleasdale congratulated all the children who took part in the Summer Reading Program.

“I would also like to thank the parents who are doing a terrific job in supporting their children by enrolling them into this wonderful program.

“It is by your example that your children and this community learn that reading is one of the most important skills you will ever need.

“As Jacqueline Kennedy once said: ‘there are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. The love of books is best of all’.”
