Blacktown Memories

15 March 2016

Blacktown City Council has started a project designed to capture Blacktown Memories.

“Too often people throw away shoe boxes full of photographs that have historic or social value," said the Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Mayor Bali.

“We will soon be launching a new website, called Blacktown Memories and, during Heritage Week, a special photograph scanning booth will be travelling the city.

“In the meantime, we are keen to collect interesting photos to add to the website.

“So if you have photos at home of old Blacktown buildings or were taken at events in Blacktown over the years, we want to be able to copy them,” he said.

Residents or former residents of Blacktown City with photos they would like to have preserved can make an appointment to bring them into the Local History section of Max Webber Library, Flushcombe Road Blacktown, where they will be assessed and scanned.

Mayor Bali, with members of local historical societies, made the call for contributions outside one of Blacktown’s oldest buildings – the Old School House in Flushcombe Road, Blacktown. It operated as a school house from 1877 until the early 1990s.

“For example you may have some family photographs from events at the Old School and these could fill in some gaps in our pictorial history,” said Mayor Bali.

“We will collate, record and classify the pictures, forming a lasting public pictorial record of Blacktown.

“In return, we will give back a high quality image on a USB that can be stored or shared,” he said. The Blacktown Memories website will be formally launched on 15 March.
